State’s unemployment rate drops to 8.5 percent

Washington’s unemployment rate dipped in September to 8.5 percent. The drop comes as the state added 1,200 jobs, the Employment Security Department announced today.

The jobless figure is down from 8.6 percent in August. Industries with the most job gains in September were leisure and hospitality, as well as government.

Joe Elling, the department’s chief labor economist, said the trend over the last 31 months shows an increasing rate of job growth.

About 296,000 people in Washington were unemployed and looking for work last month, including about 126,000 people who are collecting unemployment benefits.
