Restoring felon voting: A hot topic in the House last night

UPDATED: The first substitute did not pass. The original bill did. My apologies.

Last night the House passed a bill to restore voting rights to felons.

Under current state law, convicted, incarcerated felons cannot vote. They can, however, vote after they complete incarceration and their repaid their legal financial obligations.

The bill would allow felons to vote as soon as they are out of the supervision of the Department of Corrections, even if they have not paid back their legal financial obligations.

The substitute, however, instructed the Secretary of State to study the issue and present the 2010 Legislature with their recommendations. That bill did not pass — the original version stood.
