Live in Vancouver? Tolls in 10 years. Live in Spokane? They may be coming your way, too.

The Impact’s Jennifer Huntley interviewed Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen and Rep. Dan Roach today about tolling. They had some very interesting things to say.

Haugen, who has said for some time that tolling is going to increase across the state, told Huntley that tolling does not work everywhere. In less populated areas, for example, it’s not good policy, she said. Among Eastern Washington cities, she identified Spokane as a potential area for tolling.

As for Vancouver, where tolling is expected to help fund a replacement bridge to Oregon, she said it could be 10 years before that happens. The reason: It’s not one but two Legislatures that must agree on all the details.

Roach said he disagreed with Haugen on one issue: Early tolling. While she said it’s best in the replacement of the 520 bridge to toll early (because it will mean less money in the long run), he disagreed: Start tolling when the project is done and end it when it’s paid off, he said.

For much more on tolling — and more — watch The Impact tonight at 7 and 10 p.m. on TVW or anytime on TVW.org. (And, as usual, I’ll post here if it’s available before then.)
