Want an enhanced driver’s license? Show up early, be prepared to wait

The Departmetn of Licensing is warning drivers that wait times for the “enhanced” license (and ID card) are mounting. Turns out, the cards — which allow you to go to Canada or Mexico and back without a passport — are in high demand.

“The most important things our customers can do are arriving early, allowing plenty of time to complete the transaction, and making absolutely sure they have all of the documents that are necessary,” DOL Deputy Director Alan Haight said in a news release.

What do you need? Bring proof of identity, U.S. citizenship and Washington state residency with you. Go here for more info on what you can bring.

In some offices, the wait time is so high, they’re going to screen applicants who are waiting outside starting at 7:15 a.m., stop accepting applications after 2 p.m. on weekdays or noon on weekends, and getting a few new signs.

If you want an enhanced license but aren’t traveling in the next couple of months to Mexico or Canada, the department is asking people to wait: It could mean a whole lot less time you’ll have to wait in line.
