On The Impact tonight: Pension trouble, the Salish Sea

October 14th, 2009 by Niki Reading | Filed under Uncategorized.

Tonight, watch The Impact at 7 and 10 p.m. Here’s what’s in store, from host Jennifer Huntley:

The State Actuary is warning lawmakers that some of the oldest pensions for state employees are at risk of going bankrupt in the near future, if they don’t act. But can lawmakers fully fund pensions given the budget shortfall they will face this January? Will they need to take money from other state programs to fund the oldest retirement plans for state workers? We’ll try to answer those questions and explain what’s to blame for the pension shortfall.

Also, ever heard of the Salish Sea? You may be hearing that name more often. The Washington State Board on Geographic Names is set to vote later this month on this additional name for the waterway that makes up the Puget Sound, Strait of Georgia, and Strait of Juan de Fuca. Hear the arguments both for and against the Salish Sea and why some scientists believe the new name is a long time coming.

Don’t miss The Impact, tonight at 7 p.m. & 10 p.m. on TVW and anytime online as soon as the show is posted.
