Working on The Impact: Basic Education Funding Lawsuit

February 4th, 2010 by jessicag | Filed under Uncategorized.

I’m heading up to Federal Way tomorrow to talk with the deputy superintendent of that school district, which was one of the plaintiffs in the basic education funding lawsuit.  As you may have seen in earlier posts, a King County judge ruled the state is violating the state constitution for not fully funding K-12 education.  Federal Way schools have been in the forefront of challenging the current funding system.  I’m also trying to track down the assistant attorney general who argued for the state to see how he will proceed from here.  On Monday, I’ll also sit down with Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn for his take.

It still seems to be too soon tell what, if anything, this ruling will change and how quickly.  Since the legislature is ultimately charged with funding education, I’m working to coordinate two key lawmakers for a studio interview.  Rep. Pat Sullivan and Rep. Skip Priest have already come out with statements on the ruling, so I’m hoping to nail down a time with them, even though the House will be on the floor all day.

In addition to basic ed funding on The Impact next week, you can look for a healthy discussion on Initiative 960 and taxes, as well as tuition-setting authority for state colleges. You can watch The Impact every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
