Day 53: Let’s review

March 4th, 2010 by Niki Reading | Filed under Uncategorized.

Today:

- The Senate introduced and then held a public hearing on a bill to create a high-earners income tax. Sen. Rosa Franklin said the tax restructure — which would also decrease the sales tax — would make Washington’s system more fair. Sen. Margarita Prentice said it allowed voters to choose, but Sen. Cheryl Pflug said it’s not the time.

- House Speaker Pro Tempore Jeff Morris told me he thinks there’s a possibility the Legislature adjourns without passing a budget.

- The Senate passed a Constitutional amendment on bail. It has new language — the House did not agree on previous language from the Senate.

- The Department of Health reported that 36 people used Washington’s new assisted suicide law in 2009 to end their lives. Sixty-three people got prescriptions for the lethal medicine.

- The House Transportation Committee passed a bill that says the Legislature intends to address ferry system cost drivers, including old boats, union issues and transportation costs for ferry captains.
