Now: Managing ferry fleet costs

The House has now moved onto a bill to manage costs in the ferry system.

“We need to have professionals in charge of our ferry system,” Rep. Doug Ericksen said, of an amendment he’s proposing. He said he doesn’t want to privatize Washington’s ferries. He said Subway said they couldn’t sell sandwiches on Washington’s ferries without charging under $20 per sandwich because of the union rules.

Rep. Marko Liias: “While I’d like to have a Subway sandwich on a Washington state ferry just as much as the next guy,” he said, he didn’t like the idea of turning the system over to private hands. He said Washington has tried having private companies manage the ferry and it didn’t work.
