Secretary of State Sam Reed will have surgery for kidney cancer

Secretary of State Sam Reed has kidney cancer and will have surgery on Monday. His office reports that he is expected to make a full recovery and will return to work.

“Thanks to early detection and diagnosis, my doctors say my prognosis for successful surgery and recovery is excellent,” Reed, who is 69 and serving his third term, said in a statement.  “I’ve always been extremely active and placed a high priority on physical fitness, so that will pay dividends now. I am surrounded by loving family and friends, caring colleagues throughout the Office of Secretary of State, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Reed was having abdominal pains and visited a doctor. During diagnostic tests, they found a tumor on his left kidney. It has not spread, and the abdominal pain turned out to  be unrelated. Reed will not have to undergo radiation or chemotherapy after Monday’s surgery, according to his statement.
