Mitt Romney: Healthcare reform is about taking over the economy

June 12th, 2010 by Niki Reading | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

After a break for lunch, the Republican convention is back to hear the keynote speaker, Mitt Romney.

“It’s only been a year since that elephant was on the cover of Time magazine with the headline, ‘Endangered species,’” he said. But Republicans will be taking control of government soon, he said.

He said Pres. Obama has made many missteps in trying to create a business-friendly economy. One example: “The takeover of healthcare. His plan, of course, is to have the federal government take over one-fifth of the U.S. economy,” he said.

He said he’s concerned that Obama has not helped the economy at all. “Every step that he has taken has increased the uncertainty,” he said, and “he has frightened and scared away the private economy.”

He said Obama has “inexcusably and unnecessarily lengthened this downturn” in the economy and is always looking for someone to blame.  (more…)

Doc Hastings: Obama, Democrats are overspending

June 12th, 2010 by Niki Reading | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

We’re now done with candidate speeches and have moved to incumbent speeches.

Doc Hastings said he could hear the Republicans cheering as he was across the street. He thanked first-time convention attendees and returning delegates.

“Are you aware that we are not even going to have a budget at the federal level this year?” He said Pres. Obama sent Congress a budget that proposes to spend $3.8 trillion. “And he proposes to pay for it on a revenue stream of $2.2 trillion. Now, you do the math … that is unsustainable and we all know it. And the reason we’re not going to have a budget is that Pelosi and Reed do not want to expose their people to a vote like that.”

He challenged voters from Vancouver to Bellingham to get more Republicans elected on the west side of the state.

David Castillo: ‘Our country is at stake and true leaders’ are taking the call

June 12th, 2010 by Niki Reading | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

The third candidate for the Third District seat is now up: David Castillo.

He said the country is at stake, and he’s taken the call to serve. He said “unsustainable debt” is being foisted on “generations of Americans who are yet to be born. Talk about representation without taxation,” he said.

“Conservatism is on the ascent,” he said, “and our moment, a Conservative moment, is at hand.”

He said Brian Baird isn’t seeking re-election, “and I’d like to think that’s from the strong campaign that we ran against him.” But, he said, another challenge exists: Denny Heck, who Castillo said will likely be the prevailing Democratic opponent. He said Heck is “shrewd, he is cunning, he is qualified.” In short, he said, he’s Cantwell without the pantsuit.

Castillo said he’s the candidate to beat Heck and win. “We cannot have career politicians who are simply looking for the best paying job they’ve ever had. That is the kind of leader I will be for you,” he said.

David Hedrick: ‘A politician can bring home the pork, but first he has to steal the pig’

June 12th, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Now up, Davi Hedrick. He opened by saying he’s with the Tea Party.

He said at a recent debate, a Democratic opponent said a Congressman’s job was to bring home the pork. He says that he replied that “a politician can bring home the pork, but first he has to steal the pig.”

He said he’ll introduce a bill to repeal healthcare reform.

“We’re on a bus in this country, and it’s headed toward a cliff called tyranny,” he said. “Our solution has always been, let’s send a moderate to the front of that bus … we’ll still head toward tyranny, but we’re going to get there slower.” He said what they need is a Republican who will grab the bus driver out of his seat and turn the bus around. That got a partial standing ovation.

“The American people do not want two Democratic parties,” he said. “I think Democracy’s best described as two wolves and a sheep voting on what’s for dinner,” he said. “It doesn’t work out well for the sheep.”

Jaime Herrera: ‘There’s a movement afoot’ to replace disconnected politicians

June 12th, 2010 by Niki Reading | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Now the state convention has moved onto Third Congressional District candidates.Watch live at tvw.org. FIrst up, Jaime Herrera.

“There is a movement afoot, and we are in the very center of that movement,” she said. She said liberal politicians have passed measures to “assault our freedom.” “The arrogant elite in Congress, though, are in a panic,” she said.

She said the American dream is at risk. “If billion dollar bailouts for car companies and big banks weren’t bad enough, now Congress is talking about bailing out whole countries.” She said it’s as if Congress is looking at Greece’s tragedy as a goal.

She said she and her husband are saving to buy their first home, and every time government raises taxes, it delays that. She said taxes and spending shackle people and the economy.

“I’ve worked to create an environment where businesses and families can grow and prosper,” she said. “It’s not going to be easy” to change, “but now is the time … to break the federal government’s addiction to spending.”
